Potty Training...for those who have asked

On how I potty trained Kate:

First I potty trained her with the potty watch before Jane was born. But once Jane came into her world...she was no longer potty trained. Ugh. This is the potty watch: http://www.pottytimeinc.com/
(click on the Good Things Utah Clip to see how it works) I bought mine at Kid to Kid next to the Dollar store $9.99.
Then I waited a little while and this happened:
I wasn't going to do it until we got back from California (because we'll be gone for 3 weeks and would be driving)
But we were at Target and Kate had an obsession with horses...and she saw a My Little Pony in the Halloween section that she wanted. So I told her I would buy it for her if she could poop on the potty. Well, when we got home, she kept asking me open it and kept wanting the scissors. :) But I told her she couldn't have it until she pooped on the potty. So we went in the bathroom and she sat on the toilet and went pee (we call it "tinkle") So I gave her some "tinkle treats" (m&m's, chocolate chips, whatever you have) And she asked for the pony but I told her she had to poop in the potty first...blah, blah, blah.
So, I put big girl panties on her and we kept trying until she pooped and when she did, I made a HUGE deal about how proud I was of her and I got REALLY excited and then opened the toy for her. In the meantime she went tinkle a couple more times but then later that night she had a poop accident so I took the toy away and set it up on a high shelf where she could still see it but not reach it and I told her it was only her toy if she could keep going on the potty like a big girl. So the next time she went on the potty I gave it back to her. And after that she pretty much got it. At first, she still had the occasional accident and I put a pull up on her during her nap and bedtime just in case. But most of the time she woke up it dry. So....that was a really long explanation...but you could take your kid to the store, let them pick out a toy they thinks is great and then reward them with the good potty behavior.? Like I said though, I made her poop to earn it. Tinkle is still a big deal but not as gross to clean up so I still gave her little candies when she'd "tinkle" Hope that helps! Oh, and I let her pick out her big girl underwear....and make sure you get way more than you think you really need (3 packages is probably good from Target or Walmart) Kate picked some princess ones, Pony ones and I got a big multi color 10-pack on sale at Target for way cheap. And if Kate poops in them, I just throw them away...it's not worth it for me to clean them. Gross.Plus if you're training a boy...I've heard to put a cheerio or fruit loop in the toilet and let the little guy "aim" at it. That way he's not spraying all over the toilet and bathroom.

Good Luck!!!

This entry made me laugh. I haven't thought about potty training for sooo long, and now I'll be doing it again with our little on the way. Aghh.

Gracias chica. I'm not looking forward to this. Can I just send Dre out to your mom to toilet train him? She toilet trained Austin, didn't she?

Great post thanks for all the info. I started potty training Emma before Joslyn was born but then have slacked in the past month. Hopefully I'll be able to finally get her potty trained in the next few weeks. Wish me luck.
